What Is Ayurveda?

Ancient Wisdom, Modern Application.
Ayurveda is now, but it isn’t new. The yogis of southern India started developing it 10,000 years ago as the science of life, as the wisdom of well-being. Ayurveda covers wellness practices such as yoga, meditation, and natural medicine, all of which work together to create balance, vitality, and longevity, and bring lasting health to body, mind, and spirit. Ayurveda treats discomfort and disease by understanding the imbalances in our constitutions. In Ayurveda, our physiology is comprised of three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Derived from the elements, our doshas are the three biological energies that govern our physical and mental processes. Vata is associated with the motion of wind and air; Pitta with fire; and Kapha with the solidity of earth and water. Though we are each born in perfect balance, when any of our doshas become aggravated, we can feel uneasy, and that unease, unless dealt with, ultimately manifests as disease. Luckily, according to natural principles of Ayurveda, our doshas can be easily rebalanced, and our health and wellbeing restored. At Surya, we uphold these long-standing traditions, passed generation to generation, that have outlived even many languages. We are honored to be custodians, and to help make Ayurveda’s time-tested wisdom practical and usable in a simple and modern framework. We are honored to bring Ayurveda forward as a useful and natural tool, and one that helps us all reconnect to the curative powers of the natural world.

Vata Surya Spa
Vata
The key quality of our vata dosha is motion. If that’s our main dosha, we are quick, enthusiastic, and imaginative. But when it’s all too much, when we’re quickly fatigued, when our sleep is off, or our digestion, then at that time, there’s too much motion, and our vata is aggravated. In the simple and common-sense approach of Ayurveda, we just have to slow it down.
Pitta Surya Spa
Pitta
The fiery Pitta dosha governs our metabolism, digestion, the way we process thought, and the temperature regulation in our body. When our Pitta is balanced, digestion is healthy and efficient, sensory perceptions sharp, and our brain works quickly and precisely. When our Pitta is out of balance, irritability, inflammation, skin problems and digestive issues can appear. Since a Pitta imbalance is created by excess heat, the simplest way to return to balance is by cooling down.
Kapha Surya Spa
Kapha
When our Kapha is out of balance, we feel heavy. A slowness that can manifest in our body as excess mucus, or a cold, or unwanted weight. If not rebalanced, lethargy and stubbornness can grow, until we even find it hard to get out of bed. In times like this, we want to avoid what weighs us down. We need to literally, as the saying goes, lighten up.
