Vanilla Planifolia, Orchidaceae. Growing in the equatorial belt, vanilla is the only known edible orchid. The vines require three years to form mature pods which must be cured and dried before use, making vanilla the most labor-intensive and time-consuming botanical crop. Vanilla is viewed as a gift from the gods in the the cultures of middle America. It is also used as a temple incense and spice, as well as a useful euphoric, nervine, and aphrodisiac.
